Crisis Diverted

If you live in the Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi areas and wonder what that screaming was last Monday night contemplate no further. Ya'll there is no way that I will be able to do this story justice. It's one of those things you really had to be there, but I am going to do my best.

Where do I begin?

It was August 30, 1985.....Oh, I'm kidding.

Monday night February 7 is a night that will live on in infamy. Adam had just left the house going to town and MeeMaw had just left from visiting with Reese. It was somewhere around the hour of 6 PM. For reasons I didn't fully understand I was a little edgy....actually, let cuts to the chase. I was edgy because Sunday while at Cheaha for an afternoon drive we had seen this weird guy on a little girls bicycle who wanted to take our picture and know how old Reese was. Adam was worried that he was going to bust the windows out of the car while we walked out to Bald Rock. And that is the line that draws where I can relate to Adam. To show how sick and twisted I am- I was envisioning him following us home and stalking me for days before violently taking my life. And I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I do. Period.
On Monday this man was still on my mind and due to that I had our house locked down like Fort Knox when Adam left. When I am home alone I usually have the volume on the TV down and not a lot of noise that would limit my ability to sense an impending intruder.
I am nothing if not totally and completely paranoid.
Way back in the day Adam and I went on a camping trip with some of our besties and I was scared someone was going to try to break into our tent and kill us. So they said I was "stay alert, stay alive" all night. And they laughed at me then, but I will have them know that I contribute the fact that I am alive and breathing today to the fact that I was "stay alert, stay alive" last Monday night.

So anyway no more than 10 minutes after Adam had left Reese and I were minding our own business addressing Valentine cards when I thought I heard someone on the back porch talking. I creeped over to the door to listen, because, you know, "stay alert, stay alive" knows to never look out the blinds- they might be looking back! In which case I would kill over dead of a coronary infarction. After listening for a few seconds I decided that I must have made it up in my crazy little head. All the while watch dog Autie (the little one) was going crazy in the yard. Any of you familiar with Rat Terriers knows that is no reason to be alarmed. Little dogs have something to prove so she acts that way if she sees her own shadow. On top of all of that my mom had mentioned that my dad might stop by to see Reese.

So I went back to minding my own business when I heard the glass door open, and I kid you not, the door knob was turning. Turning people. So in my loud school teacher voice (and all of you school teachers out there know the voice I speak of. if you don't have that voice they will eat you alive- especially high school students.) I said, "who is it?- and the knob stopped turning. I quickly and quietly walked to Reese's room to see if a car was in the driveway. My car sat all alone. By then I had heard the glass door close back.
Now ya'll know no one has ever accused me of being rational or calm in a moment of crisis. Instead of going and getting the gun, opening the door, and killing someone dead I go for the telephone. Ya'll our house is filled with automatic weapons and ammunition. My weapon of choice- the telephone. Because really, I would much prefer my daddy come and kill when necessary.

I ran into 1 problem with this- MY DADDY WOULD NOT ANSWER THE PHONE! For the love of all that is good and kind in this world. I called 4 times. No answer.
Called Adam. No answer.

Called my mommas cell phone. No answer.

Up until this point I had been surprisingly calm. Really. But I was one more phone call away from coming completely unraveled.

Called my daddy on his cell phone. Finally- mom answered the phone.

"Hello"

"Send daddy over here. Someone is trying to come in the back door."

"Pat, somebody is trying to get into...." Click. Disconnected. DISCONNECTED!

For the fifth time I dial my parents number.
"Hello"

"Mother- DO NOT hang up on me!" Ya'll, my mother had hung the phone up. I mean of all times NOT to hang up this was the moment of all moments.

Of course, by the time my daddy got there it was too late. Autie was laying on the porch from sheer barking exhaustion and Dixie still didn't know anything had gone on. You know, I don't want to be too hard on Dixie since I know she is under a great deal of pressure to eat 2 scoops of food throughout the day while intermittently stopping to take naps, but really would it have killed her to bark one or 6 times? Little Autie was back there barking her little lungs out trying to save the plantation and Dixie was sitting on the front porch fluffing the hay in her Dogloo and starring at me addressing envelops through the window. She couldn't be bothered by a thief. I bet if that thief would have gone after her Dogloo it would have been a different story. But momma? Oh, they can have momma. And that baby that took all of our attention. (Yes, I just typed what our dog was thinking. I am at an all new low, what can I say?)
I really wish I could give my daddy's account of how he almost slid sideways into a tree while traveling to our house at high and dangerous speeds, but I can't remember how it was stated exactly.
That night Reese moved back into our bedroom and little to no sleep happened for me. A week and two nights later she finally went back to her room. There was some fussing and crying over this matter, but I finally gave in and let Adam put her to sleep in her own room.

So tomorrow we will be getting a little thing called security for the small price of $29.99 per month.
I wonder how much it would cost to get my yard to look like that?
Oh, and by the way we have talked so dirty about the little intruder wanna be because we now have to be hassled with knowing where our keys are at all times and always having them with us. Which will ultimately lead to locking myself out and having to attempt to climb through the kitchen window.
In case you are wondering...my days of staying home alone are O-V-E-R!

Happy Valentines Day!

I am of the school that Valentines is nothing more than a holiday made-up by the Hallmark corporation, but I will respect this made-up holiday by posting some pictures of my two favorite Valentines.

I actually found 2 cards in my car this morning waiting for me...please look at that little signature!

The other one was, of course, from the hubby telling me how much he loves me and all that jazz so I didn't think ya'll would be interested in reading such a fine Valentines love display in the form of words on a card (that I am pretty sure came from the Dollar General because now that I am thinking about it hubby was adamant about going to town by himself yesterday afternoon).

I feel the need to go back and tell ya'll a story. It was the year of 2005 and Adam and I were somewhat dating, but not really, but we really were except we didn't really want it public yet (that is another story for another time, but it involved a previous girlfriend- because ya'll- a direct quote from the hubby concerning the girls in his life prior to me- "I had hunnies hanging off me left and right." And really I have no commentary for that because it speaks for itself).
Anyway, I left a funny card in his truck on Valentines Day that year. Since he didn't have a card for me he had to sneak to my house (or trailer) to put a card on my windshield later that day. He declared he didn't know that we were doing cards since, you know, we "weren't dating." Except ya'll, we were sooo dating (in fact, he had already tried to get me to marry him that coming up summer in which I politely declined since my higher education was not complete). So anyway, the point of the story is that since I think it is a made-up holiday we never do cards, but I was delighted to see 2 waiting on me this morning. The hubby is a sweet one let me tell you.

And the only thing that could have surprised me more than the hubby giving me a V'Day card is a student giving me one! With a Blow Pop, Snickers, and an Air Head. High school teachers rarely get anything from their students, but this year I got 3 Christmas presents and now a Valentine present as well. My coworker, Miss Purdy, told me I must be getting soft!

Anyway, we had a lovely little weekend which consisted of Reese watching her "Monkey See Monkey Do" reading DVDs. She laughed and kicked her legs when the monkeys were on. It was precious.

And a lot of this took place...

On Sunday Reese wore her Valentine outfit that MeeMaw made for her. I think MeeMaw could sell this stuff! Speaking of MeeMaw can I please tell ya'll another story? Ok, last week I laughed so hard when I got a text from her saying, and I quote, "Please send me an email. I think a virus has my phone." Ya'll, a virus had abducted her phone. And I shouldn't have laughed because when a virus "has"your phone it is a reason to be concerned.

Here is some more of her handy work

After church we went to Red's for some deep fried goodness called catfish.

We had one meltdown...(I have uploaded this picture 3 times and every time it is sideways!)

And a picture to document one of the first times that Reese didn't cry when Big Daddy held her.

Reese with Jaycie and Brooklyn. Look at that superb photography on my part!

It was so pretty when we got home we sat outside for a while. This is when hubby insisted that he needed to go to town to get some things from the office. And, I bet, the Dollar General too;)

She also has these Minnie Mouse Valentine PJs.

I spent minutes of my life on Saturday learning how to use the Cricut to cut material and then iron it on to a onezie. I wasted almost a yard of fabric making that little heart, but now we know what we are doing. This was her ensemble for daycare today.
These are the cards that my friend, Amy Daniels, made for Reese to hand out at daycare. Nothing against SpongeBob Square Pants, but my sweet baby makes for a much cuter Valentine card:)

So that concludes my made-up holiday Valentines post! Happy Valentines all of you!!

Snow, Housewife, Gas, & Food

The title sums up my day today...unorganized and random.

So my day started like this...I got up at the usual, yet ridiculous, hour of 5 A.M., got ready, went out and cranked the car (because I just can't start my commute in a cold car), got my lunch packed (a healthy and appetizing bag of popcorn), and started back out the door. I decided to send my coworker Melissa Roberson (yes, at C'burg we have a Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Roberson and it leads to just as much confusion as you can image it does) a text to confirm that school was not delayed. 33/40 was not reporting a delay for us, but you know, better to be safe than sorry- and boy would I have been sorry....it was decided at 5 AM to delay 2 hours. Which, since I don't have tenure I am not going to mention how helpful it would have been to have made that announcement oh you know, a little earlier...like the NIGHT BEFORE. So I turned my car off and got back in bed with my two favorite people. Yes, Reese has slept in our room/bed for the past two nights. One reason is she is severely congested and the other reason is getting a post all its own next week. Anyway, I had the honor of taking her to daycare this morning. So during our spare time we looked out at the snow for a while...(and can I say that she is looking more like her daddy everyday. those ears are just like his!)

We even did some laundry...

And we washed dishes, started some more laundry in the washer, and cleaned up around the house. I feel the need to state the obvious- I would make an exceptional housewife. Adam, are you reading this?

The hour was approaching that we needed to leave so I attempted to wipe the 16 layers of Vicks baby rub off of her chest and we were on our way.

I traveled to school today in a vehicle that Adam and Big Daddy are trying to sell (mainly because I was absolutely out of gas and I talked Adam into risking his life and driving my car to work today in case it didn't make it to the gas station). I was given strict instructions not to put more that $1o of gas in the car I was driving because it is about to be sold. After starting the pump at the gas station and walking in to get my daily cup of heaven in the form of decaffeinated coffee I ran back to the car telling BFF Steph on the phone that, "Adam is going to be so mad, Adam is going to be so mad...." I had officially allowed $60 of gold, also known as gasoline, go into the tank!!!!!! And then I was late to school. I took "school delayed" for all it was worth! And for good reason- where I teach NEVER gets delayed.

Hubby wasn't mad- in fact, he notified me not to worry about supper tonight- he has it covered. So I am fully expecting something homemade, like Firehouse Subs.

Speaking of food- Taco Bell and I have broken up. I haven't announced this publicly until now because I wasn't sure if we were just on a "break" or past the point of no return. After an in depth discussion with my marketing classes this week about how it is being reported that "anti dusting" agents are being used in their "meat" I must say that whatever we once had is officially over. And it hurts me to say that because my college days largely consisted of 2 hard shell tacos with extra cheese and an order of nachos and cheese. I had allowed myself to be blinded by love of this fine dining establishment, but after reading this we are officially past the point of reconciliation.

Just because I LOVE her...

I have absolutely nothing to say on this Monday, but I made some pictures this weekend that I must share. I was going to wait til Valentines day, but why?? Why not share the joy today? So here they are. D.D. gave Reese this tutu this weekend.

Sometimes I look at her and it terrifies me that she is going to grow up to fast. I want her to be my little baby forever. I want her to always smile when I walk in the door. I want her to love me and need me for a long, long time. I want to always be able to cuddle her. I want to be able to kiss her sweet feet. I want to be able to smell that sweet baby smell forever. But I know that she is going to grow up and out grow her momma just a little. So for today, I will go home and hold her as tight as possible and kiss her as much as I want.

Some of my favorite things...

Hubby informed me the other night that he was aware that, "a happy wife is a happy life"- wise, wise man I tell ya. Lots of things make me happy, but in the last few days these have come to mind for one reason or another. (I will list by number to make myself feel organized)

1. This video of hubby and the wee little one

2. This video of the wee little one doing something so cute with her lips and then making a "boat" noise. She just learned this and it's her best trick as of 2/2/11.

3. Sitting in the bath tub at night after I have turned the water off and hearing the hubby baby talk Reese. Their conversations are very enlightening.

4. When the hubby declared last night after spelling enthusiasm and opportunity correctly, "hot dang, I outta be in a spelling bee!" Yes, Adam you should go register your 27 year old self in a spelling bee. Please. And while your at it go ahead and enter a grammer bee because you are sure to win that as well.

5. This picture I took during Sunday School a few weeks ago. I think she likes him, don't you?

6. Picking Reese up at daycare in the afternoons and when she sees me she smiles SO big.

7. Hearing the older kids at daycare say, "Reese's momma is here. Your baby is right up there."

8.My finest hour of the last 4 months of her life was when Ms. Liz told Adam and MeeMaw what a good baby she is and how she entertains herself during the day without having to be held. And everybody says she is spoil- ha! Ms. Liz and Ms. Rita beg to differ.

9. Coming home last night to the hubby with dinner waiting- Firehouse Subs, one of my favorite.

10. Going into Reese's room when she wakes up crying at night and as soon as I lean my head over the crib she smiles a big gummy smile that completely melts my heart.

Sunshine, Smiles, and Showers

In our little neck of the woods the weather was PERFECT this weekend! We had so much fun which made it incredibly hard to leave my baby and come back to work today. But I am not going to dwell too much on that- because I'm not one to beat a dead horse- it's not my nature;).

I finally finished these letters to go over Reese's bed. They are mediocre at best. And I didn't want to spend a lot on them since I will probably find something cuter that I just have to have within a year.

On Saturday we hosted a baby shower for Allison and Krystal. If nothing else was accomplished my house got cleaned!

A rule that we enforce at our house with semi-regularity is that sweets don't enter our door. 2 of 4 of Adam's grandparents have passed away from diabetes and Big Daddy is also plagued with diabetes. Therefore I make an effort to limit the sugar that we eat. By "we" I mean Adam. I made these candy jars for the shower and the hubby could hardly control himself. He sneaked candy ALL day on Saturday while I threatened to cut his hand off if he ate one more piece. I do it for his own good and I get no respect!

I also got the Cricut out and made these name banners.

Brandi made the cake and impressed the heck out of me! Not only was it cute, but delicious too!

I bought these leg warmers at Target and MeeMaw sewed the pink stuff to the bottom. Reese stared at her feet for the longest time trying to figure out what was on them!

Ya'll, I am just in love with that little face. And I kissed all over it this weekend.

Adam had a fire going in the fire pit. He secretly got excited when it got out and he had to pretend to be a fire fighter again and put it out.

Reese and Anna Kate with Brandi

All the girls

Anna Kate would say "hold Reese" which came out "old eese" So cute!

Adam got in her good graces by offering her candy which her momma loved:)

Allison getting a little practice. The next time that we get together will be for the birth of Krystal and Zach's Makenna!

Reese has never spent more than 30 seconds outside since it has been so cold since she was born. So I was excited that we had Sunday afternoon with no plans! So we headed to early church. Reese has this smock dress that she hasn't worn so I put it on her. She crumpled it up and pulled on it like she didn't like it. SHE IS MY CHILD!!! I hated nothing more as a child than an "itchy" dress, undergarments, or socks! But just like my momma did me- I made her wear it!

Because, really, look how cute!

And those little shoes! Now she didn't keep those shoes on more than 2 minutes but that's okay. I got a picture and that is what counts.

After church we headed to Oxford for Brandon aka Little Red's birthday party at the skating rink. Since it was such nice weather we ate outside at Mellow Mushroom. The last time we had eaten there was the week before she was born. Speaking of mediocre- our photography skills leave a lot to be desire.

And here she is at her first skate party.

The birthday boy and his cuz Britton. Do you see why we call him Little Red

And his big brother who, I am proud to say, is not embarrased to have his picture make with his crazy aunt. It only seems like yesterday that we were at his 6th birthday party and here he is- bigger than me (and making me look ghostly pale)!

So we did a little shopping where Reese got a few new outfits. On the way home I sat in the back with her since she was awake and we held hands:) And my little heart almost exploded with love:)
So all-in-all we had a FANTASTIC weekend that has left us with a serious case of spring fever!

He's Back!

The hubby has been out of town this week, but due to my state of paranoia that someone will break in and try to kidnap/kill me I did not mention this.

Dear Potential Burglar,
If you speak with my hubby I am sure he will give you at least 10 good reasons that you DON'T want to kidnap me. I would be willing to bet these would make the list: 1. I tend to cost a lot in groceries 2. I can do some serious complaining if I am not happy. I can also give you some reasons: 1. thanks to the hubby I have a shotgun and a pistol 2. after an interesting afternoon a few years ago I know how to use them 3. and surprisingly, even to myself, I am not afraid to use them 4. I also own pepper spray 5. we have 2 fierce K9's in our yard and they will bark to notify me that you are lurking 5. don't let looks deceive, the little one can be as ferocious as the big one and they will bite your legs off and then lick you to death.
Sincerely, Elena

I completely blame my paranoia on my parents who made me this way by making me continuously aware of the bad things that can happen at every turn in life. PeePaw is especially fond of telling me all the ways to be precautious in life. In college he gave me an air tank in case I had a flat tire on some country road with no cell service. Since he didn't arm me with a weapon I assume he thought I could spray a bad guy in the face with the AIR and buy myself enough time to get away. Too bad all of his precaution advice was for naught since he lost all credibility with me when he declared that he was going to start drinking Mountain Dew in order to cut back on his caffeine. Ya'll.
So anyway myself and Reese have been holding the fort down on our own the last few days. And oh my goodness at the pressure to get up and get us both ready and gone before 6 A.M. Thankfully I can send Reese to daycare in her PJs which is exactly what has happened the last 3 mornings.
We had some carrots while we waited on him...which, as you can tell, were very yummy- proof, they are on her eye lid:)

My nephew Clay refers to Reese as "Big Eyes" and this is why!

Then he walked back in the door late last night and our little world started turning again.

And they loved on each other for a while.

And then Daddy woke her up from her nap for her bath (and in an effort for her to sleep all night- which worked like a charm!)- Except she was not happy about it!

And shortly after, fell fast asleep again!

Since hubby took a hiatus from us (and since I have about as many sick days as I do condos at the beach) he is playing Daddy today and taking our sweet baby to the doctor for her 4 month shots.
Doctor Stats: 13lbs 12oz. and 24 1/2 inches long
On a completely unrelated note- today is my other nephew, Brandon aka Little Red, 6th birthday. Since Adam and I started dating the month he was born we keep up with how many years we have been together by his birthday. He is one funny little kid!

And for your reading pleasure- a short story from C'burg- I had a student come to me today and apologize for her behavior yesterday. We had had a minor altercation in the hallway which left her in the office receiving her punishment for being highly disrespectful. Anyway, she came in my room this morning to announce that she was sorry for the way she acted... "My brother got arrested again yesterday and that is why I was in a bad mood." And I accepted her apology, but only because he had been sent to the pen AGAIN. If it had been his first offense she would have been up a creek:) My job makes me laugh and continuously say "Bless her/his heart"
